Queen reigns supreme in Greatest Hits Radio’s Top 500 countdown E! News UK

In the year of the Queen’s Jubilee, “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen was voted #1 on Radio’s greatest hits annual listener led the countdown to the greatest songs of the 70s, 80s and 90s.

The global rock legends once again took the top spot with their 6-minute musical masterpiece after earning over 20% of the tens of thousands of votes cast. Beating ELO’s classic ‘Mr Blue Sky’ to be crowned No. 1, Queen also had more Top 500 countdown entries than any other artist or band, with 17 of their top-rated songs, including two classic collaborations, with George Michael and David. Bowie.

David Bowie was 3 years oldrd on the chart with the 70s classic ‘Starman’ and was the second most voted act with 12 songs making it into the Final 500. Kate Bush was the highest ranked female artist at No. 5 and ahead of Annie Lennox with Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’ at 7am.

Andy Ashton, Network Content Director of Greatest Hits Radio, commented “This year’s painting attracted more votes than ever before, making it even more representative of the times. It’s been interesting to see artists like Meatloaf, who we sadly lost recently, receive great love from Greatest Hits audiences and chart higher than ever. The Foo Fighters who recently lost drummer Taylor Hawkins also ranked. Overall, the charts were more 80s focused than ever before, with a high level of one-hit wonders also making it into the bottom 500, alongside all those massive 70s classics and cream of the 20s 90.”

Simon Mayo, who became an MBE during Top 500 week, revealed the No. 1 during his driving show on Friday. Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May said “I am very touched, thank you very much people! Freddie would have the samefeeling,hed smile probably a mean little smile and say of course darling But heI still appreciate it.

Other highly placed artists with multiple songs in the countdown included Sir Elton John (11) and Blondie (9), while George Michael and ABBA both had 8 songs each in the countdown. Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Prince all made 7 songs in the final Top 500.

Commenting on the success of this year’s countdown, Andy Ashton added “It’s great to have had so much commitment from across the nation to help compile this table. It reflects the growing scale and reach of the Network. Voting is one thing but also hearing the final rankings our listeners really love and we couldn’t be happier with this year’s results which saw our existing listeners listen longer and new listeners find the radio station for the first time time “
