#Pack9 Survives Seahawks – NC State University Athletics
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – In a back-and-forth that featured 23 hits and 24 combined runs, NC State baseball (30-16) was passed by UNCW (26-21), 13-11, Tuesday night at Brooks Field.
Despite scoring five runs to start the game, the Seahawks went 10 unanswered runs through the first three innings. The Wolfpack managed to score five more runs in the fourth to tie the game, but UNCW eventually managed two runs late in the eighth to claim the victory.
With the result, the teams split this year’s home-and-away series after the Pack secured a 7-6 win at Raleigh on April 12. Additionally, the loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Pack against the Seahawks.
The Pack started quickly when Devonte Brown and Tommy White started with back-to-back home runs. It was Brown’s fifth time this season with a homer and 12th of the season, and for White it was his 21st of the season.
White is now one homer off the ACC freshman homer record (22), four off NC State’s single-season record (25) and five off the NCAA freshman record (26).
JT Jarret and Jacob Cozart made three more points into the frame to extend the peloton’s lead to 5-0. Jarrett scored an RBI double with a hard-hitting ball to the leg of UNCW pitcher Marty Gair after Noah Soles and Will Marcy drew back-to-back walks, then after Chase Nixon walked to load the bases Cozart delivered a two-point single down the right side.
The Seahawks cut their deficit late in the first when Brooks Baldwin hit a first homer, then hit three runs in the second on an RBI brace from Dillon Lifrieri and a two-run homer from Chris Thorburn back-to-back at bats for make it a one-point game at 5-4.
UNCW pushed six more unanswered runs in the third set, taking a 10-5 lead. After three straight loaded walks on base, Ron Evans threw a 2 RBI single down the left side to score the go-ahead, then a Baldwin sack fly and Taber Mongero three-run homer scored the remaining runs in the framework.
In the fourth, the Pack made five more runs to level the score at 10-10. With the bases loaded, Jarrett drove in the first inning with a sack fly to left field, then after Nixon hit an outfield single to reload the bases Payton Green came in with a double 2-RBI on the left field wall to make it 10-8. Cozart led the offense with a 3-on-3 outing with three RBIs to tie his career high. Additionally, Brown and White each had two hits and two RBIs, while Jarrett and Green each had two runs.
On the mound, Garett Payne tied his career high for strikeouts with six in 4.2 innings of relief.
NC State will stay on the road this weekend when it makes the short trip to Duke for its second Tobacco Road series of the season. The teams will play Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field. Friday’s game will be on ACCNX while the final two games will be on Regional Sports Networks (RSN). All three games will have a radio broadcast on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network app.
