Ninth-inning rally propels Lions to series-opening win at Demons – Crescent City Sports

NATCHITOCHES, La. — The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team scored four runs in the ninth inning Friday, rallying for a 6-4 win over Northwestern State in the Southland Conference at Brown-Stroud Field.

After hitting a home run in the seventh, the Demons (20-21, 8-8 SLC) gave the bullpen a 4-1 lead. SLU (18-24, 8-8 SLC) went straight to work against reliever Gus Collins.

Evan Keller opened the eighth with a double to left field. With one out, he stole third base. Preston Faulkner, who homered earlier in the game, led Keller with a two-out single to right field.

Champ Artigues started the ninth with a double in the first base sack. He scored on Bryce Grizzaffi’s brace on the left field line, knocking Collins out of the game. Keller walked a base from reliever Dawson Flowers. A passed ball moved Grizzaffi and Keller into scoring position.

Rhett Rosevear worked on a walk from reliever Andrew Cossio and Tyler Finke followed with a two-run single down the right side, giving the Lions the lead. After throwing an intentional walk to Faulkner, Shea Thomas threw a sacrificial fly against the wall at center left for another run.

Gage Trahan worked a scoreless ninth, blocking a runner on third to end the game.

The first runs of the game, two in the first inning by the Demons and one by both clubs in the fourth, were all on solo homers. Faulkner’s outburst in the fourth was his 12th of the season leading Southland, giving him 32 in his career. He is now in sole possession of No. 3 on Southeastern’s all-time home run charts, behind Jeremy Gross (1997-98).

Hayden Robb (3-3) took the victory in relief, pitching a scoreless eighth inning. He allowed a hit and struck out one. Trahan made his sixth save of the season, fanning the last batter of the game. Flowers (0-2) was marked by the loss, walking the first batter he faced and leaving the game with a 2-0 count the next.

Faulkner (2 for 4), Finke (2 for 5), Grizzaffi (2 for 4) and Keller (2 for 4) all had multi-hit performances for the Lions.
