Huskers Open Day with 6-2 win

The Nebraska softball team opened the day with a 6-2 victory over Texas-Arlington (3-6). Second year Billie Andrews led the Huskers with two hits, including a first homer to put NU on the board first.

Courtney Wallace (4-1) recorded the start and the win in the circle for Nebraska. The senior pitched six innings, totaling six strikeouts. Kaylin Kinney pitched the final inning to end the game for NU.

In the circle of the Mavs, Laura Henriksen (0-1) recorded the defeat. Henriksen pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and three runs. Morgan Max pitched for 3.2 innings, striking out three, but allowing five hits and three runs. Jessica Adams also pitched for UTA, giving up a hit and striking out one.

Billie Andrews got the Huskers on the board early with a homer lead in the top of the first inning. It was Andrews’ fifth home run of the year.

The Big Red was able to add to the lead early in the second inning. Peyton Glatter was a step ahead and moved into second when Brooke Andrews reached on an error by the Mavs shortstop. With two on, Camyl Armendariz on the ground, but moves the runners to second and third place. Abby Newlun followed, reaching on an error, scoring Glatter to make it 2-0. Max came to throw for Henriksen, but walked Billie Andrews. Cam Ybarra hit a sacrificial fly to left field, scoring Brooke Andrews to make it 3-0. Sydney Gray was walked, but a strikeout of Abbie Squier finished the round.

UTA responded late in the second set. The Huskers recorded their first out with a rushing lead, but Morgan Westbrook and Jadyn Erickson both added singles to put a runner in scoring position. Wallace recorded his second strikeout of the day for the second out of the inning. A wild pitch got the runners ahead and a passed ball put the Mavs on the board 3-1. KJ Murphy scored a single to center field, scoring the runner to cut the lead to 3-2. The Huskers managed to get out of the inning after a ground out.

Both teams went three up three down in the third set.

Nebraska extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Armendariz started the inning with a ball. Newlun arrived on base after being paraded around. Billie Andrews hit a single in the middle. Ybarra added another single to center field, advancing Billie Andrews at second and scoring Newlun. Gray followed with a single down the right side, scoring Billie Andrews and move Ybarra to third place. Squier reached a defender’s pick and Gray reached second on an error from second defender, scoring Ybarra to make it 6-2. Wallace lined up and Glatter struck out to end the inning.

The Huskers managed to hold the Mavs scoreless for the remainder of the game despite six hits.
